Liver Spots: Unsightly Signs of Too Much Sun

As we grow older, our skin begins to reflect all the time we spent over the years unprotected from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. One of the most prevalent signs of this UV overexposure is the emergence of dark spots on our skin, particularly on our face, hands, forearms, and upper chest. These pigmented areas have many names, but they're most frequently called "liver" or "age" spots. They have nothing to do with the liver, however, nor are they really linked to aging. They're almost always the result of melanin, the dark pigment in your skin, clumping together over time in an attempt to protect your skin from UV light.

Liver Spot Removal

A wide variety of treatments are available for reducing or removing the appearance of unsightly liver spots. The pigments in these darkened areas are located near the base of the skin's epidermis, or uppermost layer, so for a treatment to be successful, it must penetrate the skin to that depth. Prescription bleaching creams sometimes fade liver spots, but they must be applied repeatedly over several months. Speedier and more effective treatments include laser therapy. Lasers are very effective at removing these unwanted spots.
